Fake tan is a great idea within the first week or so of application but once the one-week mark hits our skin looks like a patchy Weetabix print. Our natural skin tone streaming through the layers of golden tan and at this point we know we will be spending endless time trying to scrub it off.
This is the point I have reached and I’m fed up of my skin being left sore and red from endless scouring. I then realised that self-tan erasers could be the answer to my fake tan nightmares. I have tried a range of self-tan erasers that claimed to magically dissolve the streaky fake tan from my body within five minutes, however they were definitely too good to be true and definitely didn’t work. However, there are a few positive experiences I have had with fake tan erasers but have realised for the best results, the removal process needs to be repeated. It is also important to remember that some erasers are made to get rid of tan after 3-4 days of wear. Whereas some can be used immediately on a fake tan disaster you may have encountered whilst applying.
Here are the top 3 fake tan erasers I have trialled and tested…
Bondi Sands – Self Tan Eraser
The Bondi Sands self-tan eraser works within 10 minutes of application by breaking down the fake tan from the areas can be hardest to remove (ankles, wrists and elbows) and does not require scrubbing. It should be applied at least three days after fake tan and should be used on dry skin. Apply two to three pumps of the mousse product onto your hand and use circular motions to distribute across your body. The product is instilled with Aloe Vera extracts that leaves your skin feeling soothed and highly moisturised. It should be washed off with warm water to reveal the results. However, the pump can become easily clogged which can be unlocked by running it under warm water.
Use a warm cloth to remove the eraser gently and if you have applied a few layers of fake time you should repeat the process to ensure it is the tan is fully removed. This fake tan eraser preps the skin ready for a fresh application of fake tan to be applied.
The Tan Eraser
The Tan Eraser works well in combination with fake tans such as St Moriz Dark. This eraser is best used when you tan is starting to fade within 3/4 days. It is important to ensure your skin is soap and product free before applying this eraser as this can create a barrier on your skin and can negatively impact the results. It is a foam substance and should be applied on dry skin and left for around 5-10 minutes. It is the perfect solution for getting rid of stubborn tan that lingers on areas of your skin.
Once it has been left on you will need to rinse off with a warm cloth or the accompanying tan remover mitt that you can be purchased from the same company.
St. Tropez – Prep and Maintain Tan Remover Mousse
This product has a fresh scent and should be applied to your fake tanned areas, left to soak for 5 minutes and then washed off with warm water. Results can be seen within a few minutes and it does not require excess scrubbing of your skin and leaves an even based for your next fake tan application.
For stubborn areas such as your ankles, wrists ad elbows you should use the St Tropez removal mitt as this can breakdown the product in these areas. The product is specifically designed to removed fake tan build up and can be beneficial for those individuals who tan regularly as it works effectively from the fist day tan is applied. It can also be used on sensitive skin.
Tan Eraser Exfoliating Fake Tan Removal Mitt
This tan remover mitt works collaboratively with the Tan Eraser foam. Before using the mitt ensure your ski is freshly prepped, removing soap and cleansing products. Wet the Tan Eraser mitt with warm water only and squeeze out the excess water. Avoiding using extra products like shower gel as this can effect the mitts overall performance. Use the pink side of the mitt to gently remove the fake tan and use the black side of the mitt to remove lingering fake tan that sticks to dry areas. You should then rinse your body and the Tan Eraser Mitt under warm water to remove any product.
The mitt is reusable and can be washed on a low temperature of 30 degrees. it leaves your skin feeling smooth, ready for a new layer of fake tan.
DIY Fake Tan Remover
Add baby oil to your fake tanned areas and leave to soak for 10 minutes. The oil will break down the tan by loosening the skin cells your tan is attached too. You can also use bicarbonate of soda as an alternative to oil as this will help lift the tan from your skin.
Mix together 3 tbsp of sugar and 1tbsp of lemon juice together to create your own exfoliator. These products will work together to lift the tan from your skin as well as removing dead skin, leaving your skin feeling smooth.
